Adding captions to your videos
Published on 16 November 2024
A huge amount of video is watched with the sound off — on trains, in waiting rooms, at work, or simply because people don’t want to disturb anyone. Captions aren’t a “nice to have”. They’re the difference between being understood and being ignored.
Captions also make your content more accessible. Some viewers rely on text to follow along, and others simply prefer reading. When captions are clean and easy to scan, viewers stay longer.
Good captions come down to three things:
- Readability: strong contrast, large enough type, and safe margins so text isn’t covered by platform UI.
- Pacing: short lines that appear long enough to read.
- Consistency: the same colours and style across your videos so your brand becomes recognisable.
Captions can do more than transcribe. They can clarify the message by highlighting the key phrase someone needs to remember. That’s especially useful for short videos where you want one clear takeaway.
If you’re filming locally in Northampton, captions also help when the environment is busy. Even if your footage includes natural sound, a clean caption layer ensures the message survives any distractions.
At The ONE Media, we treat captions like design — not an afterthought. When captions look intentional, the whole video feels more professional.
